Renowned South African broadcaster Gareth Cliff has weighed in on the controversy surrounding American top talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who was pulled off the air indefinitely following comments about the shooting of Charlie Kirk.
In his monologue on Monday, 15 September 2025, Jimmy Kimmel spoke about flags being flown at half-mast in honour of Kirk and mocked US President Donald Trump's reaction to the shooting. According to a report by the BBC, Kimmel also ridiculed attempts by the MAGA movement to distance itself from Charlie Kirk’s murder suspect.
Shortly after, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show indefinitely and will air another show in its slot. After Kimmel’s suspension, Gareth Cliff weighed in with a lesson for the Left, which was outraged over the decision to suspend Kimmel.
Gareth Cliff reacts to Jimmy Kimmel's suspension
On Thursday, 19 September, Gareth Cliff took to his official X account and gave a lesson in tolerance. He pointed out the hypocrisy of those upset about Kimmel’s suspension. He argued that the same people have called for others to be cancelled over their opinions. Part of his post read:

“If you're on the left and you're upset by what you see as ‘cancel culture,' when people like Kimmel get fired, let me explain: The other side are applying YOUR rules to YOU. They didn't make the rules, but they're allowed to use them, just like you did. If, anywhere on your social media timeline, you said someone should get fired for worse) for an opinion, then you're just a hypocrite if you're upset when it happens to your side.“
In his post, Cliff appeared to justify Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, distinguishing the difference between an opinion and celebrating a murder. Gareth Cliff wrote:

“Furthermore, there's a huge difference between sharing an opinion (no matter how unpopular it might be) and openly cheering on cold-blooded murder. The former is usually a disagreement on facts or feelings; the latter is a revelation of true monstrosity. “
In his post, Cliff also advised people not to use certain terms whenever someone disagrees with their opinion or beliefs.

Reactions to Gareth Cliff's comments on Jimmy Kimmel's suspension
Gareth Cliff’s reaction sparked a flurry of reactions. While some agreed with Cliff’s call for tolerance, others criticised him for focusing on American issues over local ones.
Here are some of the reactions:
@rembuluwani_ argued:
“This left and right ideology just limits people's capacity to think independently. Both sides have shown evidence to support each other's logic or ideology when it suits them. Human beings are hypocrites. Period.”
@AIWillOffUs disagreed:
“LOL. You're resorting to lies now. You can't name a single right-winger cancelled by their network due to presidential pressure. A dictator is silencing his critics. Trump ended free speech. Only his speech remains.”

@Phefadu_G asked:
“So, your principles are flexible? Quite revealing.”
@NotVanVeen criticised:
“What I find pathetic is your constant investment in American issues that don’t concern you, or me. Don’t you have your own country?”
