Broadcaster Sizwe Dhlomo has set social media alight after hinting that ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is his preferred candidate for Johannesburg mayor ahead of the 2026 local government elections. The casual but loaded reply has tongues wagging across Mzansi.

It started simply enough. On Friday, 7 August 2026, a follower going by @matwas15 asked Sizwe directly on X:

"Who you giving your vote to?"

The veteran broadcaster kept it brief, responding with:

"Maybe Uncle Herm?"

Those three words were enough to send the replies into overdrive.

What made the moment particularly spicy was who showed up in the comments. EFF president Julius Malema responded with a stunned "He banna👀", a reaction that spoke volumes given Sizwe's history with the red berets. Back in 2021, Sizwe publicly shared a glowing remark about Malema, making his apparent pivot toward Mashaba all the more unexpected for EFF supporters.

See Malema's reaction below:

Sizwe did not criticise Malema or the EFF directly, but his willingness to publicly float Mashaba's name as a viable Joburg mayor candidate was enough to send ripples through political Twitter.

The post drew strong reactions from ordinary South Africans who are clearly growing tired of the traditional political options in Johannesburg.

@matwas15 echoed the sentiment behind the original question:

"We don't have a lot of options, but definitely not ANC, EFF or the DA. I guess Uncle Herm🤷🏾‍♂️"

@FollowMakhi kept it short and sweet:

"With you on that one in Johannesburg"

@PB_Mohapi87 poked fun at those who might dismiss Sizwe's words as a joke:

"It's the Red Ants saying, 'He's just joking.' Knowing Siz, he never jokes. He does what he wants. 🤣🤣"

@Komzi_01 praised the broadcaster's political logic:

@ChazIssat drew a harder line on the mainstream parties:

"The IFP guy and ATM. Any product from ANC and DA is poison."

@MawelaSean connected the dots on what this means for the EFF's standing among former sympathisers:

"EFF really fell off, lmao 🤣, because how did they lose Sizwe? 🤨 Hectic out here but anyway ActionSA is wonderful 😁"

With the local government elections still months away, Sizwe's offhand remark has clearly struck a chord with Joburg residents who are searching for a credible alternative at the ballot box.

Sizwe Dhlomo and Floyd Shivambu in heated exchange

While Sizwe Dhlomo may have shared his Joburg mayoral preference without directly taking a swipe at the EFF, his political commentary has landed him in hot water before, as reported by Briefly News.

The broadcaster previously criticised Floyd Shivambu’s political strategy ahead of his decision to launch a new political party, sparking a public back-and-forth between the two that ultimately ended with Shivambu blocking Dhlomo on social media.
