Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido is pushing back hard against claims that he sent flirtatious messages to a young South African woman on Instagram. The singer, who married his longtime partner Chioma Rowland at a star-studded ceremony in Miami on 10 August 2025, took to X on Thursday, 20 August 2026, to call the leaked screenshots fake and dismiss the person who shared them as a teenager chasing clout.
The controversy erupted after a South African woman named Lethabo allegedly posted direct messages she claimed Davido sent her on Instagram, in which he reportedly flirted with her and complimented her appearance. The story spread quickly online, with many pointing to Davido's reputation as reason enough to believe the accusation.
Davido addresses leaked DM to SA influencer
Rather than simply deny the claims, the OBO hitmaker posted what he described as proof. He shared a screenshot of how an Instagram Business Chat profile appears, pointing out that his verified account shows 30 million followers, 580 posts, and a note that he "typically replies within minutes." His argument was that the layout of the alleged leaked messages did not match how Instagram actually presents business chats, which would be visible to anyone messaging a verified business account.

"It's adults really believing that the screenshots are real. This is how the messages pane should look like. Check the differences," he wrote. "That's just a teenager fishing for attention online, and y'all falling for it."
Reports also circulated claiming Davido had threatened Lethabo with legal action for making the supposed conversation public, though the singer did not address that specific claim in his post.

Mzansi and fans react to Davido's response
The backlash and support came in equal measure. Here is what people had to say:
@Mimi_Shoki said:
"We believe the teenager, your name is David after all"
@badtGirlRiri highlighted:
"Everyone knows you are promiscuous, so it's easy to believe things like this about you. I hope you take time to reflect on how you ruin that aspect of your image. Lol, it's Davido; people will believe this kind of accusation before they even reason it."
@macky_empire remarked:
"And you think it's okay to explain when you claim it's fake? David! David!! David!!! How many times have I called you? If you embarrass my sister again, we'll not forgive you o"
@_Omalicha_nwa applauded:
"Trust me, this quoting you just did is the best. At least, clearing yourself doesn't make you any weaker. It shows how manly you are and the utmost respect you have for your woman, Chioma. Truth be told, she's chasing clout because she knows someone like you would bring her the attention and audience she's looking for."
@humanologistic advised:
"Man, stop wasting time explaining yourself to folks whose own lives are a mess. You owe nobody an explanation for what you do."
