Author and filmmaker Jackie Phamotse has broken her silence on an alleged gang rape she says she survived, describing in chilling detail how a night out with friends turned into one of the most traumatic experiences of her life. She made the revelation during an episode of The Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh Xperience, which premiered on YouTube on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Phamotse, who recently released her novel, told host Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh that she had been drinking with friends for roughly an hour when she needed to use the bathroom. She said she felt at ease in the venue because she could see women working there, which gave her a sense of security.
A woman who had been serving at the bar offered to accompany her to another bathroom upstairs. Once there, Phamotse said she began feeling increasingly unwell and asked the woman for something to ease her headache. The woman returned with two pills, which Phamotse took without suspicion.
"I had no idea what it was. I just thought it was a Panado or something," she recalled.

She said her body quickly became numb and she lost control of her limbs, though she remained conscious throughout. The woman then returned to the room with two men.
"And yes, it did. Um, that's the night that I experienced a gang rape happen like that in my life," she said.
Injuries Jackie Phamotse suffered from the alleged sexual assault
Phamotse described suffering extensive physical injuries during the alleged assault, which she says went on for several hours. These included a burst eardrum, a fractured hip, a dislocated arm and severe damage to her tongue and mouth.
"I don't even remember parts of it," she said, recounting memories of screaming and bleeding while unable to breathe or move properly.
After the ordeal, she said the woman reappeared and threw a R50 note at her, saying,
"Well, that's what you're worth."
The men allegedly dragged her down the stairs as she was losing consciousness.
Phamotse said she did not immediately know who her alleged attackers were. At the time, she was focused on completing her matric and leaving the area. It was only later, when election campaign posters began appearing around town, that she said she recognised faces from that night.
"That's when I realised that I actually now know who my rapist is. I see the faces on those placards," she said.
Her friends, she added, also recognised the men from the venue and confirmed they had interacted with them earlier that evening. Phamotse did not publicly name the individuals during the interview.
