Sjava appears to be on his way to making it four years running. According to a post shared by verified Durban Culture blogger @_durbanculture on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, Spotify is set to officially name the artist as the most-streamed South African Hip-Hop artist of 2026 on the local platform, following the same title in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The post, which included a graphic bearing his verified Spotify profile, highlighted that his track with Amapiano songstress Thatohatsi Ama hem hem has racked up 4,761,250 streams, while a feature on Mlindo The Vocalist's debut album Emakhaya, Egoli (feat. Sjava), sits at 16,940,183 streams.

Sjava's streaming streak raises a question

The achievement has not arrived without debate. While many fans celebrated the milestone, a chunk of the conversation centred on whether Sjava rightfully belongs in the Hip-Hop category at all.

@ntokozo_mazila_mbolwane raised the question plainly:

"Is Sjava hip hop though?"

@idenjzjjs took it further:

"I know he's technically classified as a hip hop artist but c'mon. When was the last time he actually did more hip hop than his Afro soul stuff? All his last 4 solo albums were Afro soul albums. It's still ridiculous that he's still classified as a hip hop artist because of what he did 10 years ago when he entered the industry as part of Ambitious Records."

Not everyone was caught up in the genre debate.

@khetha_fuze kept it simple and supportive:

"You will always be on top bhuti 🙌👏 @sjava_atm."

@khosa_esquire offered a one-word reaction with a tearful emoji:
