Simphiwe "Simz" Ngema and her partner Tino Chinyani have made history on The Masked Singer South Africa, becoming the first-ever duo to take the stage together on the popular local version of the hit reality show.

The couple, who recently featured on Top Billing, appeared under the Sheep masks, keeping their identities hidden from both the audience and the panel of judges.

Guesses from the judges and viewers ranged wildly, with celebrity names like Reason (Sizwe Alakine) and Gigi Lamayne, as well as Nadia Nakai and Toss, thrown into the mix. Guest judge Zee Nxumalo also took a stab at identifying the pair. Of the entire panel, only J. Something managed to get it right.

Speaking to Sowetan about the decision to join the show, Tino said his adventurous spirit was the driving force.

"I'm a risk taker. I'd rather jump into the deep end and learn if I can swim. I also love that we work fantastically together. We had never done anything like this before, and I had never even thought about doing something like this. I'm glad we did it, because we came out better."

Simz was equally enthusiastic, describing the appearance as a career high point.

"Goes down as one of the biggest highlights of my life. Loved every moment."

More than partners and parents

Beyond the entertainment value, the experience carried a deeper personal meaning for the couple, who share two sons, Tiyani and Kaboentle. Simz reflected on how the show reminded her of a side of their relationship that busy schedules can sometimes overshadow.

"It reminded me of how much chemistry we have, not on-screen or on stage, but as a couple. Life gets busy with the kids and work, and you forget that you're best friends."
