Actress and poet Botlhale Boikanyo has something major to celebrate: her mother, Dr Mumsy Nokufa Boikanyo, has officially earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from North-West University (NWU). Both women shared glimpses of the graduation ceremony on social media, and the internet is here for every second of it.
Dr Boikanyo's path to the podium is the stuff of inspiration. She described her journey as one that moved her "from security officer, to student, to lecturer and now officially a doctor of philosophy", a trajectory that underlines just how far hard work and faith can carry a person.

A journey built on resilience
In a lengthy Instagram post, Dr Boikanyo pulled back the curtain on the emotional weight behind the academic achievement. She wrote that the moment "means so much more to me than a graduation ceremony because behind this gown is a woman who started this journey with nothing but a dream, her faith and a determination to keep going even when she had no idea how the story would end."
She did not shy away from the darker chapters of the journey either. "There were days I questioned myself, cried in silence, and wanted to quit. The weight of being a mother, a lecturer, a woman, a provider, and a student sometimes felt like too much," she shared.
The newly minted doctor also spoke candidly about the personal trials she faced alongside the academic pressure.
"There were moments that almost broke me. The divorce, rebuilding my life from scratch, loss, grief, rejection, revisions and corrections. Self-doubt kept creeping again… and again."
'Today I can say I made it'
Despite everything, Dr Boikanyo crossed the finish line, and she is clear about what this milestone truly represents. For her, the PhD is far more than a qualification. She concluded:
“This moment isn't just about finishing a PhD. It is a testimony that God is faithful to finish what He starts… Today I can say I made it against all odds. By His grace.”
Her daughter Botlhale, well known as an actress and poet, accompanied her mother to the ceremony, with the pair sharing photos from the special occasion on social media.

South African poet Botlhale Boikanyo announced her appointment as UNFPA's Regional ICPD Youth Champion for East and Southern Africa.
Boikanyo said she first discovered her voice through poetry and never imagined it would one day serve as a platform for youth advocacy.
