Cheslin Kolbe's wife, Layla Kolbe, has taken aim at President Cyril Ramaphosa after he addressed South Africa's gender-based violence crisis at a golf event, despite having been signed off sick. Her pointed remarks on Instagram Stories have ignited a fierce conversation about government accountability.
Ramaphosa attended the ANC Veterans League fundraising golf day at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead on Monday, 21 September 2026. His appearance raised eyebrows because he had been booked off sick since 16 September, a period during which police were actively investigating a string of killings involving women whose bodies were found in the Ekurhuleni area. Speaking to journalists at the event, the President called GBV a national crisis and promised to deploy more funding, resources, and technology.

Layla Kolbe slams Cyril Ramaphosa over GBV
Layla wasted no time responding. She shared a screenshot from the golf day on her Instagram Stories, questioning why the President felt well enough to attend a sporting event while women were dying.
"Your ANC president is not sick for golf today," she wrote.
She then challenged the President on why combating GBV had not been treated as an urgent priority long before this moment.
"Every time it's like we're starting from scratch? Why have you not been prioritising this all along? We marched years ago, and you promised the same! Now it's just more of this and more money and more money! Death penalty is the only answer, sorry to say," Layla wrote.
She also suggested the President's public remarks were strategically timed.
"Also, he's now seems better to speak today because it's his golf day! His staff told him to say something before showing up for golf. Mxm. It's not about the ANC anymore people! They don't care about your loyalty! They safe with their many bodyguards and lavish lives while they hand out blankets for loyalty! Come on! South Africa deserves better," she added.
Layla Kolbe calls for stricter laws
Layla also pushed back on Ramaphosa's comments about GBV occurring inside people's homes, arguing that women are not safe even during everyday activities.
"He says even if GBV happens in the privacy of people's homes. No, cupcake, she went for a run!!!!! She went to the post office! We don't expect you to protect us in the privacy of our homes. We expect better law enforcement 😩😔 yoh. Don't say plain and simple. You are doing nothing, yet you say it's 'plain and simple'. You know what is plain and simple? Better and stricter laws. Death penalty. Plain and simple!!!!!!!," she wrote.
Her posts come as pressure continues to mount on the government over its response to violence against women across South Africa.

Rachel Kolisi criticises Ramaphosa
