MacG has added his voice to the swirling conversation around Nota Baloyi's reported control of music masters and royalty income tied to rapper Kwesta, using a clip shared through Podcast and Chill to break down what he believes may have led to the current situation.

The popular podcast host was upfront that his account was based on what he had heard rather than verified facts, acknowledging that some details might need to be corrected. According to MacG, Kwesta, Leroy and Nota were all young and ambitious when they came together with plans to launch a record label; all three supposedly aligned on the same vision.

Why Nota Baloyi's company was used?

The practical problem came when it was time to formalise the business. Nota reportedly already had a registered company, so the group decided it made sense to use his existing entity to get things moving rather than wait for a new one to be set up.

MacG described it as a stopgap measure, with the understanding that a new company would be registered in due course.

"We'll use your company for now, and then later we'll register a new entity," he recalled. "But just to get this ball rolling, we'll use your company. And until this day, it hasn't been changed."

It is that failure to follow through, MacG suggested, that could help explain how questions about ownership of the masters and royalty collection have persisted. He was careful to frame his account as secondhand information rather than a definitive legal explanation of who owns what or how the royalty structures are set up.

MacG's warning to upcoming artists

Beyond the specifics of the Kwesta and Nota situation, MacG used the discussion as a broader lesson for musicians, producers and aspiring entrepreneurs. He stressed that people rarely know how big a business venture will grow when they are just starting out, making it critical to put the right structures in place before any money or catalogues are on the line.

"You must be careful when we start these things… You never know what it's gonna become. So just do it right from the onset," he said.
