Is Sneaky Pete based on a true story?

The show is purely fictional. But one of the executive producers, Bryan Cranston, said that the main character, Marius, was inspired by his own life. According to Deadline, Cranston said the following:

But there are many examples of things that I was circumventing accountability in and finding my way through. And it’s OK if you’re a teenager from a broken home and you have no father as a mentor and your mother is becoming an alcoholic before your own eyes.

According to IMDb, the first season of Sneaky Pete was released originally by Amazon Prime Video on August 7, 2015. It had ten episodic twists and turns. It introduced viewers to Marius, an ex-con and former con artist, who quickly found himself haunted by his criminal past.

To escape penance, he identified as fellow prisoner Pete, who was still incarcerated. Pete had unknowingly revealed enough information to Marius for the latter to believe that he could easily pass himself off to Pete’s family as their long-lost son.

Netflix has no plans to produce a new season of Sneaky Pete. The streaming service has obtained the licensing rights to air all three seasons on its platform. This is possible despite releasing originally on Amazon Prime because Sony Pictures Television owns the underlying rights to the series.
