A Kenyan lady who recently completed her internship as a doctor has shared her payslip, showing her R28 741 gross salary before the recent government pay cut.
The lady said she completed her internship in January this year and disclosed that she earned a R28 741 gross salary, translating to R20 000 net pay after taxes and deductions.

Speaking to Citizen TV, the medic also detailed the role of intern doctors, insisting that R10 000 is not a fair compensation for interns who work long hours in hospitals.

"According to the KMPDU, interns have 14 duties. They examine, take samples to the lab, and await investigations. In level five hospitals, interns are the primary doctors," she said.

The government now wants intern doctors to take a pay cut, one of the contentious issues that led to the current doctors' strike.
"Most intern doctors earned between R19 000 to R21 000 depending on whether they have the hardship allowance," she added.
This comes as the doctors' strike has lasted more than a month and as the standoff between the government and medics continues.
KwaZulu-Natal's unemployed doctors' protest continues
In other news, Briefly News reported on the ongoing strike of unemployed doctors in KwaZulu-Natal. They took the protest outside the province's Health Department offices. The graduates demanded that the government honour its commitment to employ health workers in April 2024.
KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane said the provincial government is in talks with the national government to obtain funding to fill doctors' vacancies. Netizens had varying views on the doctors' protest; some supported the initiative, and some asked if they could not find other forms of employment.
