A Durban man has left social media users completely stunned after sharing a video of a woman claiming she earns an incredible R1.7 million per month from her food business.

Content creator @andile.ngcobo.221659, who shares personal and travel content on his Facebook page, posted the viral clip in mid-July that has everyone talking.

In the video, the woman confidently states that she makes this massive amount of money by running a takeaway food business. When asked how she manages to earn so much, she explains that she sells kotas, chips, sausages, and various other meals from her food stall.

"Haaa🫥🫥no way🔥🔥🔥" and the video quickly went viral, getting over 400 comments and 500 shares.

The clip was shared for a food business called Deep Fried Supremes, which sells the popular South African street food.

Kotas are a beloved South African street food made from a quarter loaf of bread filled with chips, sauces, and various toppings like sausages, chicken, mutton, or steak. Similar to bunny chow, these filling meals are popular across the country and can be found at many takeaway spots.

The woman's bold claim about earning R1.7 million monthly has sparked huge debate online, with many people questioning whether such earnings are realistic from a food business alone. Some viewers suggested she might have additional income sources or government connections.

Food business earnings in reality

According to experts on BusinessForSale.com, selling food in South Africa can be profitable, but the earnings are much more modest than the woman's claims. A typical home-based food business serving families in the area might make around R16,000 profit per month.

The calculation shows that selling 32 meals per day at R25 profit each, five days a week, would generate R16,000 monthly profit. Even successful food businesses would need to operate on a massive scale with multiple locations to approach the claimed R1.7 million monthly earnings.
