On the 6th of August, a content creator who makes budgeting content was able to reach 302K people after sharing how a R34K monthly salary would cover her expenses as a Cape Town resident. The creator uses AI to generate her images and named her avatar Gabriela.

Gabriela makes up different budgeting scenarios that spark conversation on TikTok. In a now-viral post, she shared how she survived on a R34K monthly salary with a rent of R9.5K:

“The biggest chunk always. Living in Cape Town is not cheap, but at least I have a nice view.”

The lady also had to cough up R2.6K for her monthly groceries, and amazed South Africans with how little she spent on food, and said:

“Woolies' food prices are killing me these days. I’ve been tracking in my super cute budget app, and it’s giving me anxiety every time I scan something.”

Gabriela spends around R3.2K on transport and puts away R5.2K into her savings and investments, and explained:

“Petrol prices, car payments, and insurance have me crying. Sometimes I wonder if I should just Uber everywhere. I’m actually proud of myself for sticking to my investments. Future me will be thanking present me.”

With the money she has left, she uses R1.8K on entertainment. The total amount of her expenses was R22.2K, and she was left with R11.7K, which left people wondering what she did with it:
