A local man came forward to claim his R11 million Lotto Plus 1 jackpot, which he won from a R60 ticket purchased via the TymeBank app.

The announcement was also shared on X by Ithuba, garnering many views and comments from a sceptical and unimpressed public.

The new multimillionaire had placed a modest R60 Quick Pick bet through the TymeBank app for the draw on Wednesday, September 3rd, winning a total amount of R11,276,926. Local news publication IOL reported that the winner always believed that his lucky break was just around the corner, which is why he always kept his phone close by. He said that when he received the notification that he was the jackpot winner, he was overcome with emotion and offered a prayer of gratitude.

SA responds with scepticism and doubt

The news was met with a largely unimpressed and sceptical reaction to Ithuba's X account. Many users questioned how the jackpot was being won so suddenly and so often. Some said that the system might be rigged, as there was only one winner. Others offered some advice, telling viewers to stop playing the game, saying they would save a lot of money.

"I've never seen a lottery being won every week apart from South Africa, of course. We must be a country that is blessed with winners."

User @Mshengu_Wawa asked and advised:

"Are you people still playing the lottery? You're literally burning and throwing away your money. Boycott it while you can. With that R300 you spend monthly on lotto, buy stock shares and check them after 20 years. You'll thank me later."
