A local, talented housekeeper has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a practical tip for cleaning your iron. The TikTok video was posted on 20 September 2025 by Mbali Nhlapho the Housekeeper.

In the video, @Mbali Nhlapho advises that leaving water in your iron can lead to rust buildup. To fix this, she suggests adding 1 cup of vinegar to your iron and letting it steam clean to remove the rust.
The need for proper iron maintenance
She also shared an easy cleaning mixture for the bottom of your iron. The mix includes 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, 1 teaspoon of Sunlight liquid and a squeeze of lemon juice. To clean your iron, you need to warm it up, then unplug it and use a sponge to gently scrub the mixture on the surface. Once the grime is gone, wipe it clean with a cloth for a shiny and rust-free finish. The Maids reported there are various ways of cleaning your iron by heating your iron and ironing in circles over newspaper sprinkled with salt until the salt is removed. Unplug the iron and wipe away the grime.
