A South African traveller's winter snow-chasing mission paid off in the most picture-perfect way. Ron Mackenzie made his way to the remote village of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape on 10 August 2026, hoping to catch the mountain hamlet in full winter glory. He was not disappointed.

Nestled in the Drakensberg foothills near the Lesotho border, Rhodes is one of South Africa's smallest and most historic villages. When snow falls there, it transforms the cobbled streets, old stone buildings and surrounding peaks into something straight out of a storybook.

Mackenzie filmed the scene in a selfie-style video, panning across the snow-covered village as he described settling in for the cold. A warm fire, strong coffee and a cosy guesthouse made for the perfect retreat. But it was the unexpected guests wandering the snowy road outside that truly delighted viewers: a small flock of sheep, unfazed by the weather, taking a stroll through the village as if it were any other morning. Mackenzie said, laughing as he filmed them huddled together for warmth:
