BI Phakathi team then surprised him with a generous cash gift, far more than he expected. As the money was placed in his hands, his mood shifted. He began to speak.
His story came out slowly, each chapter heavier than the last. He was injured on duty during the 2010 FIFA World Cup after being struck by a car. In 2018, he lost his first leg after picking up a virus in hospital. By 2023, the infection had spread, and on 1 March that year, surgeons amputated his second leg. The personal losses came just as quickly. On 9 May, his wife told him she was leaving, saying she was "not a man's bum anymore." Then on 24 June, his father died in his arms. He is now the sole carer for his 80-year-old mother.

To make matters worse, he has not received a payment from the Road Accident Fund in 10 months. The fund, which owes him roughly R3,500 a month, is facing a financial crisis. Doctors have also told him that a planned operation cannot go ahead because his heart is too weak to survive it.
