GAUTENG — A 21-year-old man has formally withdrawn claims that he was robbed at gunpoint aboard the Gautrain, after surveillance footage from the rail network proved the alleged incident never took place.

The passenger had previously alleged that three armed men confronted him on board and made off with his iPhone, AirPods, and laptop bag while he travelled between the Midrand and Rosebank stations. The story circulated rapidly on social media, prompting serious concern about passenger safety on the commuter rail service.

Gautrain CCTV review disproves the claim

Following the allegation, the Gautrain Management Agency launched an immediate investigation. Officials sat down with the passenger and his parents to review security footage from across the transit network. The recording showed the man travelling without incident to Park Station, where he disembarked and exited the premises without any confrontation.

Faced with the footage, the passenger admitted that the robbery did not occur on the train. He confessed that he had lied out of fear of his parents' reaction after walking through an area they had explicitly told him to avoid. He claims the actual robbery took place on the street while he was walking to his girlfriend's house after leaving the station, though his family could not independently confirm this account.

Family apologises to Gautrain and the public

Following the CCTV review, the passenger's parents released a public statement retracting the allegation and offering an apology to Gautrain, its security personnel, and members of the public for the negative publicity the false claim generated.

Gautrain CEO Tshepo Kgobe used the moment to reassure commuters, stating that safety remains a fundamental part of the rail service experience.

The retraction has since prompted calls from activists and social media users for the South African Police Service to open a perjury case against the young man for wasting state resources, though no formal charge had been confirmed at the time of publication.
