A Johannesburg woman turned the tables on a street robber after he allegedly tried to steal her handbag. The dramatic encounter was captured on CCTV footage and shared on Facebook by Thokozile Happiness Zondo on 17 August 2026, where it quickly drew widespread attention.

The footage shows the woman clutching her bag tightly as the suspect attempted to overpower her. Rather than surrendering her possessions, she grabbed hold of him and pushed back, matching him move for move in a tense back-and-forth struggle that lasted under two minutes.

As the confrontation continued, several people in the area took notice. A few pedestrians who happened to be walking past stopped and intervened, with one man physically restraining the suspect and giving the woman a chance to recover. A driver who had pulled up nearby also eventually got out to assist, though viewers noted he had hesitated for some time before doing so.

The woman managed to keep her bag and walk away with her possessions intact.

The incident comes against the backdrop of South Africa's latest national crime statistics, which show a 9.5% year-on-year drop in murders and double-digit decreases in robberies and carjackings. Despite the encouraging figures, street crime remains a daily reality for many South Africans, particularly in urban areas like Johannesburg.
