A young South African woman has built something remarkable out of a teenage idea. What Talita started at 16 as a science fair experiment using cutting boards and toy spade handles has become MiDesk, a fully patented portable desk-and-chair unit now changing lives in classrooms across the country.

The eNCA feature, shared on Facebook on 30 August 2026, introduced viewers to the innovation and the story behind it. Talita, now 26, spent a decade refining her original concept into a product that works for real children in real conditions.

The unit is not a simple folding desk. It includes an adjustable chair that can support up to 180 kg, solar-powered lighting for studying after dark, and wheels tough enough to handle uneven rural terrain. Students can use it both in the classroom and at home, giving them a consistent study surface regardless of their school's infrastructure.

MiDesk has already reached over 5,300 students in under-resourced schools, and the team has set an ambitious target: one million children empowered by 2030.
