A Northern Cape woman has touched hearts across South Africa after sharing her emotional story about receiving an RDP house.
Yvodia Andrews from Wrenchville appeared in a video posted by the Northern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Facebook page @Coghsta NC on 23 July 2025 as part of their "Testimony Wednesday" series, where she expressed her heartfelt appreciation for inheriting her late mother's government house.
According to Wikipedia, the Northern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs is responsible for overseeing municipalities and housing developments within the Northern Cape province. "My mother used to say she's not going to stay in the house, and I didn't know exactly why she meant that. Maybe she was already preparing herself to leave the earth," Yvodia said emotionally.
The young woman expressed her extreme happiness at now having a secure roof over her head.
"I don't have to stress about tomorrow, what if someone is going to chase me out. No one's going to do that anymore because now it's mine," she said, explaining how the house allows her to provide stability for her children.
Yvodia ended her testimony with advice for other South Africans:
"If you receive yours from your parents, please don't sell your house, guys, because this is yours. You must be proud of it. I heard people are complaining around me, but I'm not complaining. I'm just happy I got a house."

How to get an RDP house in SA
According to the SA Government site, government subsidised housing is a programme that allows beneficiaries to acquire houses built and provided by the government through subsidies. These houses were commonly called 'RDP Houses' after the Reconstruction and Development Programme implemented by President Nelson Mandela's government in 1994.

To qualify for a government house, applicants must be South African citizens who are contractually capable, earn less than R3,500.01 per month per household, and be first-time government subsidy recipients. Single people must have financial dependents, and applicants need identity documents, birth certificates of children, and proof of income. Applications can be made at Provincial Departments of Human Settlements or local municipalities, though waiting periods differ across municipalities, and housing development typically takes at least two years.
