Mmalibu shared that a career in law requires both passion and strategy.
“I would say that when considering a career in law, the honest reality is that it is an oversaturated degree. So firstly, it is important that you have a passion for law and find which area or path of law you would like to go into. Having a specialisation such as a Master's degree always helps set you apart."
She emphasised the importance of starting early:
“In order to secure employment, I think it is a journey that starts during varsity. You have to be disciplined and work really hard academically, but also you have to practice exposure by joining different law societies that give a glimpse into legal work. It is also important to do volunteer work or vac work so that you are somewhat seasoned by the time you go for the job market.”

Reflecting on her own experience, Mmalibu highlighted the need for resilience.
“Pursuing a career in law needs resilience and a positive attitude. Even though I was good enough to make it into the doors of a Big Five law firm, I was unfortunately not chosen to stay. And instead of giving up and letting it get to me, I continue to apply to different roles that I still aim for."
She also reminded aspiring lawyers that there are multiple paths to a legal career.
“A traditional law career path is not the only way. There are alternatives to being an attorney, such as paralegal work, compliance work, and other legal roles. So always do your research beforehand and never be discouraged if you have a passion for Law."
Marcia shared her perspective on pursuing a career in law and the realities of working in the profession. She said:

“I wouldn’t discourage anyone from pursuing a career in law, especially if they are truly passionate about justice and committed to making a meaningful contribution to the legal system. However, it's important to acknowledge that this profession is highly demanding, particularly in private practice. There are approximately 30,000 legal practitioners in the field, which means the competition is significant. To succeed, you must be able to distinguish yourself and bring something unique to the profession.”
Marcia emphasised that while the title of 'lawyer' may sound prestigious, real success requires consistency, resilience, and a strong work ethic. She explained:
“Without dedication, it can be difficult to earn a sustainable income. Reaching the top requires consistent effort and careful planning. Anyone considering this path should research the realities of both public and private practice, including salary expectations, employment prospects, and the challenges of running a firm.”
She also encouraged aspiring lawyers to look beyond the traditional attorney role, highlighting the diverse opportunities a law degree can unlock. She said:
