The two met in Cape Town, where they rented rooms in a house filled with other strangers. Mashupye had been working in the city after leaving Johannesburg, and Amza had left Rwanda to do his master’s in South Africa.
Amza tried to get Mushupye’s attention, but she made things hard as she was in a committed long-distance relationship. After her relationship ended, she finally got a chance to get to know Amza:
“I knew I only had 60 days in Cape Town, so that’s why I decided to give him a chance.”

Young African couple shares intercultural love story
Mashupye had intentions of having a long relationship with Amza while he was already head over heels for her. A bit of time went by after Mashupye confessed her feelings for Amza:
“I received a text saying, ‘I love you’ from her.”
He was stunned by the confession and made plans to move to Johannesburg with her:
“We both were in long-distance relationships, and they failed. I told her that I could work from anywhere, so I could follow her to Johannesburg.”
Mashupye felt uneasy about Amza following her because she didn’t want to be the one to blame should the relationship end prematurely.
Xenophobic comments from family and friends
Amza avoided dating South African women because of how other foreign men described them:

“It was all just generalisation because Pretty is none of those things. I know some people probably think that I am with her for papers and citizenship, but that is not true.”
When Mashupye introduced her man to her family and friends, some of her relatives were not very pleased that she was with a foreigner:
“They warned me by asking me questions like, ‘Are they not going to cook you in a big pot?’ Or worried that he had kids and wives back home.”
Some of the things she heard stuck with her, but assurance from her partner resolved her frustrations.
Celebrating each other’s culture
Mashupye converted to Islam after Amza explained the religion’s practices to her. They had an Islamic wedding and plan to have another wedding in Rwanda and a Pedi tradition ceremony soon.
The couple often cook their traditional foods for each other and learn to speak each other’s language. They also spoke about having kids, but they are in no rush as they still have a lifetime to go.
