A young Gauteng man's dream night turned into a nightmare when a car accident cut short one of the biggest moments of his life. @mbathankanyiso_979 posted a photo slideshow on TikTok on 8 August 2026 that told the full story, from the joy of buying a new car to the wreckage left behind after the crash.
He had only owned the vehicle for less than two weeks before the accident happened.
A night built on love
The evening had started with so much promise. He had arranged a romantic setup in a small, decorated space complete with balloons spelling out "Happy Anniversary," a couch, a heart-shaped cutout on the floor, and rose petals scattered throughout. Friends helped him pull it all together and assisted in bringing his girlfriend to the entrance with her eyes covered.

When she finally saw what he had put together for her, she was overwhelmed. He got down on one knee and proposed. She covered her face, broke down in tears and said yes.
But the evening did not end the way he had planned. On the drive home, the couple was involved in a serious accident. The images he later shared showed the car badly wrecked. He wrote that God had protected them, and follow-up posts confirmed they were both recovering, with no life-threatening injuries.
He captioned one of the slides, "Right after proposing to you, my love, we had a terrible accident, but god protected us 🙏."
