Addison Logan and his wife Judy, who runs the TikTok account @africanamericanfam, shared the full breakdown in a clip filmed in the Western Cape on 15 September 2026.

Addison opened the video by noting that Americans, in particular, were going to be surprised by the numbers. The couple went through every expense from their very first consultation at R1,800, a natural birth at R15,000, and an emergency C-section that added a further R4,500 to the bill.

With all costs combined, from the first appointment through to aftercare, the couple spent R50,695 out of pocket. Addison announced the figure with visible excitement, and Judy's reaction suggested even they had not quite believed it until that moment.

The video struck a nerve because US healthcare is considered the most expensive in the world, with per capita spending exceeding $14,500 (around R235,943.28) per year. A standard doctor's visit without insurance in the US can set a patient back between $300 (around R4,881.58) and $600 (around R9,763.17), and out-of-pocket emergency costs have been known to push families into debt.
