SANDTON, JOHANNESBURG — The Deputy President of the Patriotic Alliance, Kenny Kunene, denied his involvement with Katiso Molefe when he was found outside Molefe's house. Molefe was arrested on 21 July 2025 for the murder of Oupa John "DJ Sumbody" Sefoka. South Africans were stunned.

According to News24, Kunene, who is also the Johannesburg MMC for Transport, was outside the home and waiting for a meeting when members of the South African Police Service raided the property in Sandton, Johannesburg. Kunene denied having a relationship with Molefe and said that they are not friends.

What was Kunene doing there?

Kunene said that he was accompanying a young journalist who was part of a group of people who would be running his online news platform, Africa News Global. He said that the publication needed a good, exclusive story to get traction and revenue. A contact arranged an interview with Molefe at his home. He reportedly showed the police how the address was sent to his phone, and he was let go.

The police also demanded to know if he had Molefe's number, and he gave them his phone to check. They accepted that it was not on his phone.

Why was Molefe arrested?

Molefe was arrested in connection with DJ Sumbody's murder and that of a whistleblower who was gunned down in Vereeniging. Molefe and alleged gunman Musa Kekana, Tiego Mabusela, and former police detective Michael Tau were arrested on 21 July and are expected to appear in court. Molefe was already on bail in connection with the murder of a whistleblower in Vereeniging in April 2025.

When was DJ Sumbody killed?

DJ Sumbody was killed on 20 November 2022 in a drive-by shooting. He was gunned down in his Volkswagen GTI. His driver was in the car with him, and both were declared dead on the scene.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi implicated police officers, businessmen, prosecutors, politicians, and members of the judiciary in a drug syndicate that operates nationally. He also said a prominent businessman and police officers were linked to Sumbody's death.

What did South Africans say?

Nerixens commenting on X were shaken by Kunene's presence in the house.

Kane said:

"I stopped voting for the ANC, only to give my vote to another jailbird."

Siya SA said:

"No surprise here. Kunene is a well-known criminal."

PovertyKiller said:

"Gayton M was already furious about General Mkhwanazi's briefing as media briefing, and now this."

Le rata depth gore said:

"This man was a robber and committed fraud back in the 90s. This is what happens when you have criminals leading you."

FsctOverFear said:

"This country doesn't need a commission. It needs a hard reset."

During a media briefing on 6 July, KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi hinted at a breakthrough in several celebrity murder cases.

Although no arrests had been made at the time, he said suspects were being tracked and evidence was mounting. Mkhwanazi also alleged that some senior officials were obstructing investigations to shield drug-linked criminal networks.

He further revealed that firearms recovered in Gauteng had been linked to multiple murders in the entertainment industry since 2021.

On Monday afternoon, 21 July, four suspects connected to DJ Sumbody’s murder were arrested in Gauteng during a joint police operation. Police said three of the men acted as hitmen, while the fourth planned and coordinated the fatal shooting.

Kunene performs at Rick Ross's after-party
