CAPE TOWN - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander in Chief, Julius Malema, did not mince his words on Thursday when responding to media questions.

In the briefing, he tackled several hot-button topics in the country, such as the axing of former Higher Education Minister, Nobuhle Nkabane, competition from the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, allegations of South African Police Service (SAPS) collusion with crime syndicates and alleged that the police’s top cop has an arrest warrant against him.

The EFF leader was speaking ahead of the party’s 12th anniversary celebrations set to take place in Khayelitsha in Cape Town on Saturday, which was moved there due to heavy flooding affecting the Eastern Cape, where it was originally planned to be held.

Malema alleges arrest warrant out for Masemola

While responding to questions from the media, Malema alleged that there is an arrest warrant out for the National SAPS commissioner, Fannie Masemola. He also said that he does not know why Masemola “is not being picked up,” and that the arrest warrant is related to “what he did for” Lieutenant General Peter Khumalo. Khumalo was the head of the SAPS crime intelligence unit and was arrested along with six of his colleagues in relation to allegations of illegal appointments in the police service, after KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive media briefing earlier this month.

IOL reports that SAPS has denied Malema's allegations that there is a warrant of arrest against Commissioner Masemola.

Mchunu slammed for not resigning

The EFF’s leader also lambasted now-suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for not resigning. Stating that, if he is found innocent, it could lead to a political comeback.

“It is not late for Senzo to resign. Wait for the commission, where he will clear his name…when you resign and you go clean your name, the people themselves are going to say, ‘but this guy must be returned back to his position because he was an honourable man who said, 'I've got nothing to hide’," said Julius Malema, EFF Leader.

Criticism of Nobuhle Nkabane

Julius Malema described what happened to the former higher education minister as “painful” after she was sacked from her position. It came after she was alleged to have misled Parliament. The party leader said that because she is still a young person, she still has the opportunity to make a comeback as well. However, he also notes that “she was not ready to be a minister” after she skipped a Parliamentary inquiry into her misconduct, opting instead to attend an event in the Eastern Cape on 18 July 2025.

Malema shaded the minister over some of her habits in meetings, adding some advice for her to follow:

"The first thing she must do is to stop chewing gum in a meeting. She was still doing it even yesterday there in parliament.

Malema continued by saying that:

"The second thing is she must be humble. And know that she doesn't know and be prepared to be guided and be advised by proper people because, only a person who doesn't know how government work would've advised her to do the things she did.”

No MK Party to worry about as EFF inroads made

Despite becoming the new biggest opposition party in the National Assembly after the 2024 General Elections, the Commander in Chief is not worried about any competition from the MK Party. He said that the party might lose votes from “tribalists, not amongst the progressive South Africans.”

He also claimed that there has been an increase in support from the Western Cape, and that there have been “inroads” made in both the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces, as they expect a rise in votes from these regions.

The significance of Khayelitsha

As the party is getting ready to host it’s anniversary celebrations at Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium, Malema explained that the location of Khayelitsha was specifically chosen to highlight inequality, the poor quality of service delivery and continued historical injustice under a DA-led government, which often boasts about excellence in governance in the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape where it holds power.

“The chosen venue of Khayelitsha is significant. It is the second-largest township in South Africa, home to thousands of poor and working-class Africans who continue to live under the weight of spatial apartheid and deliberate underdevelopment.
"Khayelitsha remains physically and economically separated from the so-called 'world-class' parts of Cape Town. When the DA-led City speaks of a smart city, they are not referring to Khayelitsha.

"They are referring to the white enclaves of Sea Point, Claremont, Constantia, and Stellenbosch, while the people of Khayelitsha are left to swim in poverty, crime, poor sanitation, overcrowding, and lack of basic housing,” Malema told the press.

The EFF is due to hold its 12th anniversary rally on Sunday, where it has prepared a dome that can allegedly host 10,000 people.

Malema alleges Ramaphosa's loyalty prevented Mchunu's firing, public disagrees

Briefly News earlier reported that the EFF leader, Julius Malema, commented on President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on leave, with Professor Firoz Cachalia assuming the role.

Despite Juju's point of view, many South African social media users have largely agreed with the President's action.
