AFU seizes luxury vehicles, including R17.9 million Lamborghini

After securing an order by the Gauteng High Court, the AFU were able to seize a fleet of luxury vehicles, including a Bentley Continental GT V8 worth R4.1 million, and four Lamborghinis. The most expensive Lamborghinis were the Aventador SVJ and Lamborghini Aventador Ultimate Coupe, which the AFU valued at R17.9 million each. They also seized a Lamborghini Huracan STO (R8.7 million), a Lamborghini Urus (R6.9 million), and a Regency 250 LE3 boat worth R1.9 million.

Expensive properties are also part of the spoils

It wasn’t just the cars and boats that were the targets of the AFU, as the unit pounced on numerous properties.

It includes a R88.5 million mansion in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, and two neighbouring properties in the heart of Sandton, worth R69.7 million and R71.6 million respectively. The unit also seized other properties in Three Anchor Bay, Pecanwood Estate, Hartbeespoort Dam, and Zimbali Coastal Estate in Ballito.

The Zimbali Coastal Estate property was allegedly the venue for a secret meeting between former Police Minister Bheki Cele and tenderpreneur and attempted murder accused, Cat Matlala. Matlala and Maumela are known friends and business partners.

Briefly News spoke to a resident from the coastal estate who said it was concerning just how many high-profile criminals were seeking Zimbali as a safe haven.

"We chose to live here to raise our families in a safe environment, but often find that we are living with the very criminals we are trying to escape.
Just last year, the National Intervention Unit (NIU) came and shot dead a man in a house here because he was also up to nefarious activities. It has become very concerning.”

How did Maumela benefit from the Tembisa Hospital tenders?

Following investigations into Deokaran’s report about possible large-scale corruption, it was found that 14 entities linked to Maumela benefitted from at least R415 million thanks to contracts awarded by Tembisa Hospital.

The 14 "syndicate companies" were either under the control of Maumela and his family or associated with them.

The investigations found that the hospital's supply chain management and procurement processes were contravened by the syndicate companies.

In some cases, there was no evidence that the companies ever supplied products and equipment, despite being paid for them. There were also instances where details in crucial documents were tampered with and forged.
