South Africans Laugh as Nandipha Magudumana's Lawyer Denies Receiving Direct Payment From Netflix

  • This comes after Mugudumana and her accomplice and romantic partner, Thabo Bester, filed a court order to stop the Netflix documentary about them
  • The court denied the couple's bid to have the Netflix documentary, titled Beauty and the Bester, halted

The legal representatives of Doctor Nandipha Magudumana have strongly denied the claims that she received direct payments for the Netflix documentary titled Beauty and the Bester.

She said that the cost was claimed for the archives.

What did the lawyers say?

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, representing Netflix, stated that Magudumana was compensated for the archives of the documentary. Ngcukaitobi said that they are perplexed to see Magudumana challenging the release of the documentary.

Magudumana's lawyer, Dinana Reid, denied this. She said that there was never any direct payment to Doctor Nandipha Magudumana. Reid said that if any payments were received, it was for the legal cost of the papers that she looked at. She said that the cost was claimed for the archives.

The court dismissed their application with costs, striking it off the roll for lack of urgency. Judge Sulet Potterill said in her judgment that she was critical of Reed and Magudumana’s legal teams for their last-minute application and the filing of papers hours before the hearing. Both the lawyers of Bester and Magudumana said they were disappointed by the judgment.

In another article, Briefly News reported that the state dropped its case against one of the suspects on trial for the escape of convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester.

The suspects appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrates' Court in the Free State on 17 June 2025. Thabo Bester's lawyer also announced that he would not continue with the case as there were no funds to retain his services.
