Near-Physical Altercation Between Danny Jordaan and NEC Member Mkhangelwa in Bloemfontein

A scuffle between the South African Football Association (Safa) president, Danny Jordaan and National Executive Committee (NEC) member Simphiwe Mkhangelwa almost turned physical.

What happened between Jordaan and Mkhangelwa?

It is alleged that Jordaan tried to block Mkhangelwa, the president of Safa Nelson Mandela Bay, from registering for a 10 am meeting on Tuesday, 9 September 2025. Jordaan stated that Mkhangelwa was suspended by the region and was not allowed in the NEC meeting.

Mkhangelwa allegedly pushed Jordaan out of the way and entered the meeting. This reportedly resulted in a scuffle between the two. Officials, including senior members Poobie Govandisamy, Natasha Tsichlas and Monde Montshiwa, had to step in to separate the two.

He said that his suspension was not legal, that was why he insisted on attending the meeting. The president of Safa Nelson Mandela Bay stated that an individual wants to destabilise his region and wants him out. Mkhangelwa further alleged that Safa CEO, Lydia Monyepao, did not consult with him.

Mkhangelwa facing suspension

On his way to Bloemfontein, he allegedly received a call from the CEO not to attend the NEC meeting. He said that on his arrival, he was informed that his room was given to another NEC member, and he was booked into the Road Lodge. The CEO allegedly followed the instructions of Jordaan.

Mkhangelwa stated that the CEO used her own money to book him at the Southern Sun after he refused the previous accommodation. This was only for one night, and the CEO reportedly told him to find alternatives the following day.

On the day of the meeting, Jordaan allegedly came out shouting at Mkhangelwa while queuing for tickets. According to Mkhangelwa, he was approached violently by Jordaan. He said the SAFA president manhandled and pushed him around to stop him from entering the meeting. Mkhangelwa stated that he felt humiliated.

Why was Mkhangelwa suspended?

The president of Safa Nelson Mandela Bay was suspended for allegedly instigating racial tension in the region. It is reported that Mkhangelwa told people that coloured people should not lead football in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.

This is a violation of the Nelson Mandela Bay Football Association (NMBFA) constitution. It is also alleged that Mkhangelwa made allegations about the Safa president, Danny Jordaan’s, financial funding of the Larofa pre-season tournament during 2025.

In a previous article, Briefly News reported that the SAFA president had appeared in court after being arrested for allegedly mishandling funds as the organisation's president.

The allegations related to R1.3 million being spent on personal reasons by Jordaan from 2014 to 2018. Local netizens blasted Jordaan on social media, saying the 73-year-old must be replaced as SAFA president with immediate effect.
