DELFT, CAPE TOWN — The Western Cape Education Department expressed its sadness after a grade 3 learner committed suicide in Delft in the Western Cape on 16 November 2025.

According to News24, the incident took place on the Cape Flats. The department said that it is providing the learners of Delft North Primary School with counseling support and has been in contact with the family of the victim.

Community councillor speaks

According to Smile FM, Delft's ward councillor Michelle Adonis said that the incident was a tragedy. She conveyed her condolences and said that she met with the school's learners, teachers, and the principal. She also said that a team of trauma counsellors and social workers will be sent to the school.

The family also noted that the bullying started in grade 7, when the learner began boarding school.

In a related article, Briefly News reported that a man from Sharpeville in Gauteng committed suicide after his girlfriend's body was found in his backyard room. The woman was last seen on 5 January with her boyfriend.

He was accused of killing her and packing his bags, leaving for Qwa-Qwa in the Free State on 6 January. The South African Police Service found him dead on 7 January. When they opened his room, they found that the victim's body was in the room.
