GAUTENG - The Congress of the People (COPE) has demanded that President Cyril Ramaphosa immediately dismiss Senzo Mchunu, citing testimony heard at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The party stated that Mchunu was unfit to hold public office, saying that the revelations before the commission had destroyed whatever confidence remained in Mchunu's ability to serve in government.
The party also raised sharp questions about the financial cost to taxpayers of maintaining two Police Ministers simultaneously — one active and one suspended — while serious allegations against Mchunu continue to mount.

Mchunu was placed on special leave with immediate effect on 13 July 2025 by President Cyril Ramaphosa, following allegations made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Professor Firoz Cachalia was then appointed as Acting Police Minister.
New allegations levelled against Mchunu
The renewed pressure on Mchunu follows testimony from Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) State Advocate Drushantha Ramsamy, who appeared before the commission on 5 August 2026.
Ramsamy told the commission that IDAC Chief Investigator Dylan Perumal had informed her in January 2025 that Mchunu arranged for a witness to be flown to the Eastern Cape to consult with Perumal and submit evidence regarding alleged irregularities at Crime Intelligence. The allegations centred around the unit's procurement of a forklift that reportedly was never delivered.
Ramsamy said she understood that Mchunu or his office had made the travel arrangements and covered the associated costs for the witness, noting that the witness did not have the financial means to fund the trip independently.
She described the minister's direct involvement in organising the witness's travel as unusual, adding that Mchunu appeared to hold a specific and vested interest in the forklift procurement investigation beyond receiving routine ministerial updates.
He also faces scrutiny over his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which General Mkhwanazi claimed was done to shield criminal cartels operating in the country.
Mchunu says he's never been accused of corruption

The suspended Minister of Police was called to testify after he appeared before the Ad Hoc Committee as well.
Mchunu said that he was never accused of corruption throughout his career as a public servant.
