WESTERN CAPE — A BackaBuddy fundraising campaign launched in the wake of a devastating fire at Dorchester Court on High Level Road in Sea Point has raised more than R180,000 in just four days, offering critical relief to 58-year-old Lauren Strime, who lost her home of 21 years in the blaze.

According to News24, the fire broke out on 30 July and claimed the life of Lauren's 92-year-old father, Sam Strime, a long-time Sea Point resident who remained active at local schools well into his nineties. Authorities believe Sam re-entered the smoke-filled building in an attempt to rescue Lauren's dog, Buddy, before succumbing to smoke inhalation. Firefighters subsequently pulled Buddy to safety from inside the burning apartment.

Brother speaks after tragedy

Lauren's brother, Kevin Strime, publicly thanked emergency services for saving Buddy, acknowledging that losing both their father and the dog in a single incident would have placed an even heavier burden on the family during an already devastating time. Lauren escaped with nothing beyond her dog and the clothing she had on, leaving behind all furniture and personal belongings accumulated over more than two decades.

Community rallies around Lauren

Campaign organiser Gabriella Strime led the fundraising effort, drawing contributions from members of the local Jewish community alongside international donors. The response allowed Lauren to secure a new apartment in Green Point, furnishing it with basic necessities, including a bed, a fridge, and a washing machine.

Lauren has expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support as she works to re-establish herself following the loss. The fundraiser remains open to assist with additional settling-in costs as her recovery continues. Police investigations into the precise cause of the fire at Dorchester Court are still ongoing.
