EASTERN CAPE — Prolonged electricity disruptions are set to affect parts of the Eastern Cape as heavy snow, biting winds, and sub-zero temperatures stall network restoration efforts.
The intense cold snap began on Monday and will persist through Tuesday, creating widespread disruptions across impacted municipalities. A level 6 weather warning for severe snow remains active across the Chris Hani District, along with the Matatiele, Senqu, and Elundini areas.
According to The Citizen, forecasters warned that heavy snow accumulation threatens to isolate remote communities, snarl road transport, and interrupt daily activities. Treacherous, frozen road surfaces will continue to create dangerous travel conditions as the severe front moves through the province.
Severe Weather Halts Repair Teams
Daphne Mokwena, speaking for Eskom, reported that field crews in Joe Gqabi and Alfred Nzo are struggling to reach damaged infrastructure due to extreme weather obstacles.

"Communities are urged to remain patient with electricity supply restoration as our technicians are facing challenges due to adverse weather conditions. For the safety of Eskom personnel, technicians may be unable to access certain areas or safely carry out repairs while weather conditions remain hazardous," stated Mokwena.
She highlighted that safety protocols will inevitably extend the time required to bring power grids back online.
"Eskom is urging communities across the Eastern Cape Province to exercise extreme caution as adverse weather conditions, including snowfall, very cold temperatures, and strong winds, are impacting parts of the province. Eskom technicians and field teams remain committed to restoring supply as soon as it is safe and practically possible to do so," Mokwena noted.
Households across affected regions should anticipate extended blackouts and prioritize safety while hazardous conditions persist.
