CAPE TOWN — President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled a R264 billion infrastructure project pipeline, with 170 projects scheduled to enter procurement over the next 12 to 18 months.

According to East Coast Radio, Ramaphosa addressed delegates virtually at a summit held in Cape Town on 25 August 2026. He stressed that building and maintaining strong infrastructure is central to South Africa's economic growth and its deeper integration into the African continent.

South Africa's infrastructure portfolio expands

The president, who identified technology as a key driver for economic growth, noted that the country's capacity to manage and advance strategic projects has grown considerably over the past six years. South Africa's strategic integrated projects portfolio has expanded from approximately R340 billion in 2020 to more than R1.67 trillion at present, representing a significant scaling up of both state and private sector capital deployment across core economic sectors.

Ramaphosa identified roads, rail, maritime ports, energy grids, water distribution networks, and digital infrastructure as the key systems required to support local businesses, households, and broader regional commerce across Southern Africa.

Procurement push to sustain development momentum

Government officials indicated that fast-tracking the procurement schedules for the 170 projects is intended to maintain the momentum built through recent development efforts. The investment focus is directed at modernising physical trade routes and upgrading essential utilities to better connect South Africa's economy with the rest of the region. The expanded portfolio signals a deliberate strategy to mobilise large-scale capital across multiple sectors simultaneously, with both public and private investors expected to participate in the rollout.
