GAUTENG - Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero found himself at the centre of a public storm after an explosive confrontation with a Tshepisong resident left South Africans talking.

Morero had travelled to the area to address ongoing electricity problems and broader service delivery concerns. What was meant to be a community engagement quickly turned tense when a heated argument broke out between the mayor and a local resident.

The exchange was captured on camera and spread rapidly across social media. According to reports, the confrontation escalated after the resident allegedly referred to Morero as a criminal. The mayor responded sharply, repeatedly telling the resident not to make such a claim and dismissing what was being said as nonsense, using explicit language in the process.

Morero takes full accountability

After the video gained traction, Morero recorded a separate video message directed at the residents of Johannesburg and Tshepsong. In it, he acknowledged that his emotions had gotten the better of him.

"I profusely apologised for my utterances. I shouldn't have done it in that manner and I take full accountability,"he said.

Morero also confirmed that he had since reached out directly to the resident involved in the confrontation.

The apology drew attention to the pressures facing local government officials during community visits, particularly in areas battling persistent service delivery failures. Tshepsong, like many Johannesburg townships, has been affected by unreliable electricity supply, which continues to frustrate residents.
