LIMPOPO — A search operation in the Pretoriuskop section of Kruger National Park came to a tragic end on 31 August 2026, when human remains were discovered in Mestel Dam, days after a suspect fled into the water to escape arrest.
The incident began in the early hours of 28 August 2026, when Field Rangers encountered four individuals allegedly conducting illegal net-fishing in the area. Three of the four complied with rangers' instructions and were taken into custody without incident. The fourth, however, entered Mestel Dam in an attempt to flee, placing themselves in immediate danger.
Multi-day search yields tragic result
Rescue teams launched an urgent response and conducted an extensive search over several days, covering areas both within and beyond the park's boundaries. Monitoring rangers ultimately spotted human remains in the dam on 31 August 2026. Emergency services and the South African Police Service (SAPS) assisted in recovering the deceased from the water.

South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the discovery in an official statement issued by Head of Communication and Spokesperson JP Louw. The statement described the loss as "a profound tragedy that weighs heavily on everyone involved" and extended condolences to the family and community of the deceased.
SAPS takes over investigation
SAPS is now leading the formal investigation into the incident, including a forensic identification process to establish the identity of the deceased and provide closure to the family.
SANParks acknowledged the efforts of all rescue personnel involved in the search, expressing "immense gratitude" to the teams who conducted what it described as a "gruelling" operation over multiple days.

Previous incident of human remains found at park
Briefly News previously reported on a smilar incident regarding human remains that were found at the Kruger National Park. A report by the park idicated that the remains found where he was last seen belong to a woman. They were thought to possibly belong to missing park ranger Checkers Mashego, whose whereabouts still remain a mystery. DNA tests on the human remains found a month after his disappearance indicated that they belonged to an unidentified woman.
