KWAZULU-NATAL — A man suspected of belonging to the West Gang was fatally shot during a confrontation with police at a residential property in Inanda, north of Durban, on Wednesday night.

Officers encountered the suspect at the house, where a gunfight broke out before the operation concluded with his death. No police officers sustained injuries during the incident.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed that preliminary investigations connected the deceased to the West Gang, a criminal organisation that has attracted growing attention from law enforcement in the province.

Known as “Sniper,” he was linked to many cases of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Netshiunda further alleged that the man was among young men seen carrying firearms in footage that circulated widely online, believed to have been recorded in KwaMashu.

At the time of his death, the suspect was wanted in connection with a range of serious offences, including murder, kidnapping and house robberies.

Attempted murder case opened

Investigators have since registered a case of attempted murder to examine the full circumstances of the encounter, including the alleged attack on the officers involved.

Police operations targeting armed criminal groups in KwaZulu-Natal have intensified in recent months as authorities pursue suspects wanted for violent crimes across the province.

Four suspects shot dead in Inanda

In similar news, four wanted suspects were fatally wounded after a shooting with police in Inanda, north of Durban, on 10 February 2026. The men were traced to the Amatikwe informal settlement by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Inanda Task Team and Provincial Tracing Team. They were wanted for several cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robberies. Police also recovered three guns at the scene of the shootout. Police were yet to confirm whether any suspects fled the scene.

Three armed robbery suspects killed during shoot-out

Previously, Briefly News reported that three suspects wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies have been killed following a shootout with police. The incident happened in Bester, Inanda, Durban, on Monday, 13 July 2026, following an intelligence-led operation. According to police, the suspects initiated the exchange of gunfire when officers closed in on their location. A gunfight ensued, leaving all three men dead. Three firearms were recovered at the scene following the confrontation.
