WESTERN CAPE — KwaNdelu Shisanyama has publicly apologised to the families of 10 people killed and 11 others wounded after gunmen stormed its premises in Lwandle in the early hours of Saturday, 27 September 2026.
The attack began at approximately 1:46 am, when armed men entered the food establishment and opened fire on patrons. Five people died at the scene, while a further five succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

KwaNdelu issues apology to community
In a statement released following the massacre, the establishment extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the injured, its staff, and the surrounding community.
"We humbly ask for forgiveness and sincerely apologise for the pain, grief and suffering experienced by the families, those who were injured, our employees and the wider community," KwaNdelu said in the statement.
The business also clarified its nature of operations, describing itself as a food establishment focused on braaied meat and other food.
KwaNdelu stated that it does not sell alcohol and that its normal trading hours end strictly at 10 pm, raising questions about the circumstances that brought patrons to the premises several hours after closing time.
Western Cape police have since opened murder and attempted murder cases and established a multidisciplinary team led by serious violent crime detectives to investigate the shooting. Local police deployments in the area have also been increased.

Briefly News reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the Wedela tavern shooting that left 18 people dead.
Gauteng police confirmed only four of the deceased have been identified so far, with five victims critically wounded.
Ramaphosa described the attack as evidence of an urgent national crisis, stating that technology was already being deployed to assist police.
