Most of their prominent players, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, struggled to make an impact and received intense criticism as a result.
Who will be Man United's difference maker?
The former Ajax boss said Rashford could be decisive this season following his brace against the League One club in the Carabao Cup.
"The goals not only have to come from Marcus Rashford," Ten Hag said via Manchester Evening News. "We need more goalscorers but I know from my first season here when he scores then it's [easier] for the team when you have a player in your squad who is a guarantee for goals."
"Then it can make the difference. You can do a lot of things very good between the boxes, but football matches are decided in the box."
Rashford has now scored three goals in two games after failing to find the net in six months. The England international scored 30 goals in Erik ten Hag's first season and will be looking to get back to that form this campaign.
Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez, and Rasmus Hojlund are other player fans will be looking at.
