Diogo Jota: Liverpool Forward Dies at Age 28, Weeks After His Wedding

Liverpool star Diogo Jota has sadly passed on at the age of 28 after being involved in a car accident alongside his brother in Zamora, Spain.
The Portuguese international was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League recently, and just got married to his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, two weeks ago in Porto, Portugal.
The news of his death was first reported by Spanish media outlet Marca, as they confirmed that he was travelling in the vehicle with his brother, Andre, who is also a footballer.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2019 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and was part of the team that won the 2024-25 Premier League title in May during Arne Slot’s first season.

Diogo Jota dies in a car accident
According to Marca, the car Jota and his brother, Andre, were in went off the road on the A-52 in the province of Zamora, and caught fire after the impact.
The Portuguese Football Federation released an official statement on their social media page to share their heartfelt tribute to the passing of one of their players.
"The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning, in Spain," the statement reads.
"Much more than an outstanding player, with nearly 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.
"The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players respectively played.
"The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.
"We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily."
