The defending Betway Premiership champions eventually found the breakthrough in the 28th minute when Marcelo Allende delivered a pinpoint cross to Iqraam Rayners, who rose unmarked and powered home a header for 1-0.

The home side restored parity seven minutes after the Brazilians' goal, after Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo struck a shot that slipped through the hands of Ronwen

Sundowns were without their captain, Themba Zwane, who Cardoso confirmed was injured in their last match.

Cardoso explains why Sundowns dropped points

Cardoso, who recently explained the reason behind the Brazilians' struggles this season, reflected on the game, saying Sundowns pushed until the very end but felt the officiating didn’t bring much positivity to the contest.

“They fought hard right up to the last minute, with plenty of stoppages along the way. It was Sundowns battling for a result, but the flow of the game wasn’t helped,” he told SuperSport TV.

The Portuguese tactician admitted it was far from a straightforward encounter, and they had it tough.

“We pressed high up the pitch, took some risks, and one mistake cost us. We created several opportunities, but when you don’t convert, results like this are always possible.”

Summing it up, Cardoso said the performance left him frustrated: “It wasn’t a great game, and while it didn’t completely hurt us, we definitely should have taken more from it.”
