Former PSL goalkeeper Walter Khumalo has raised concerns about the workload placed on Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, recommending that the goalkeeper be rested for at least three matches to recover his form.
Khumalo, who represented Black Leopards and Free State Stars during his playing career, shared his assessment with KickOff, pointing to minor errors in Williams' domestic performances as evidence that the 32-year-old is feeling the strain of an unrelenting schedule.
Williams Stretched Across Multiple Competitions
According to Khumalo, the volume of football Williams has been required to play, without adequate recovery time, is at the root of his recent inconsistency. The goalkeeper has been active across domestic league fixtures, the CAF Champions League, FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the World Cup itself, in addition to daily training sessions with Sundowns.
"There is no decline in Ronwen's abilities; his quality remains unchanged. He simply needs a period of rest," Khumalo said.
"He has been involved in domestic competitions, the CAF Champions League, World Cup qualifiers, and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as the World Cup, all without sufficient recovery periods."

Khumalo also highlighted the physical toll of routine club training, noting that this compounds the fatigue accumulated through competitive matches.
Rest, Not Decline, the Issue Says Khumalo
Khumalo stressed that he does not believe Williams has lost any of the ability that has made him one of South Africa's leading goalkeepers. Instead, he attributed the recent lapses to the demands of an intense playing schedule.
The former goalkeeper said Williams needs time away from competitive football to recharge, both physically and mentally. He likened the Sundowns captain to a machine that also needs regular maintenance, arguing that a proper break could help him regain his sharpness and confidence.
Khumalo recommended that Williams be left out for at least three matches, believing the rest would allow him to recover from the accumulated fatigue and return to his best level.
Williams continues to captain both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana and remains a key figure in South African football.
