Hugo Broos has broken his silence on the South African Football Association's decision to replace him with Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach, issuing a pointed warning about the direction the national team could take under new leadership.

Broos described Mosimane as a successful South African coach and confirmed that he was among the candidates to take charge of the national team.

Broos raises concerns about Mosimane's appointment

Speaking to Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad, Broos acknowledged Mosimane’s credentials but warned that his appointment could see Bafana Bafana return to an environment where outside influence plays a major role.

However, the Belgian coach expressed concern that Mosimane’s arrival could take South African football “five years back” by potentially reopening the door to interference from club owners and agents in squad selection.

Broos explained that during his time in charge of Bafana Bafana, he took a firm stance against external pressure. He said he shut out agents and refused to engage with them when they attempted to influence his decisions.

His comments indicate that Broos fears the structures and independence he established within the national team could be weakened under a new coach, particularly one with strong ties to the South African football landscape.

Contract talks with Mosimane hit stumbling blocks

While SAFA and Mosimane have reportedly reached agreement on the financial terms of a potential deal, negotiations have stalled over several non-financial clauses. Key areas of dispute include image rights, Mosimane's popular podcast, and his involvement in youth development projects.

Both parties have yet to resolve these issues, leaving the appointment in an uncertain state despite the broad expectation that Mosimane would succeed Broos in the role.

Mosimane is one of the most decorated coaches in African football, having won multiple league titles and the CAF Champions League during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns and later Al Ahly.
