Thabiso Monyane: Kaizer Chiefs Dealt Huge Blow As Bafana Bafana Star Is Ruled Out With Injury

  • Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane sustained an injury during training on Monday, sidelining him for four weeks
  • The 26-year-old Bafana Bafana right-back had started all five of Amakhosi's matches this season before the setback
  • The ex-Orlando Pirates star's absence adds to a growing injury list at Chiefs ahead of their Sunday clash with Siwelele FC

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that right-back Thabiso Monyane will miss approximately four weeks of football after sustaining a training injury on Monday, with his return expected in October.

Monyane had been a consistent presence in the Amakhosi starting line-up this season, appearing in every one of the club's five matches played to date. His absence leaves head coach Fernando da Cruz short of options at right-back during a period in which he is still working to settle on his best eleven.

Da Cruz faces selection headache

With Monyane unavailable, Da Cruz will need to turn to alternatives to fill the right-back role. Dillan Solomons and Reeve Frosler are the most likely candidates to step in, while Zitha Kwinika could also be deployed in the position depending on the tactical demands of each fixture.

Chiefs' first assignment without Monyane comes on Sunday against Siwelele FC, giving Da Cruz little time to prepare a replacement combination at the back.

Monyane joins lengthy Chiefs injury list

The timing of the injury is particularly difficult for the Soweto giants, as Monyane is far from the only player currently unavailable. Langelihle Phili, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Paseka Mako and Khanyisa Mayo are among the other players currently sidelined, placing significant strain on the squad's depth.

Since joining Chiefs from arch-rivals Orlando Pirates ahead of last season, the 26-year-old has featured in 29 competitive matches for the club, quickly establishing himself as a reliable fixture in the Amakhosi defence.
