Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly won the race to sign Bafana Bafana right-back Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, beating Orlando Pirates to his services.
The 27-year-old defender, who was part of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has attracted significant interest during the current transfer window. iDiski Times reports that Sundowns have now reached an agreement with Polokwane City, with personal terms also settled.
Sundowns close in on Matuludi deal
Thabang Matuludi’s proposed move to Mamelodi Sundowns has gathered momentum, with multiple reports indicating that the Bafana Bafana right-back is now close to completing his switch from Polokwane City.

iDiski Times reports that Sundowns have reached an agreement with Polokwane City and also settled personal terms with the 27-year-old. The remaining formality was described as a medical before the transfer could be officially announced.
Matuludi’s potential arrival would give Miguel Cardoso another option on the right. SABC Sport reports that the club’s interest in Matuludi dates back to Khuliso Mudau’s long-term injury.
The Polokwane defender was also part of South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, adding international experience to his club credentials. He has been a regular contributor for Rise and Shine since helping the club establish itself in the top flight.
His attacking contribution is also evident. iDiski Times puts his league tally at 72 appearances, six goals and two assists, while FBref records 64 Premiership appearances across the three seasons it covers.
Bafana defender set for new challenge
Matuludi joined Polokwane while the club was in the second tier after previously playing for amateur side The Dolphins. Five years later, he is reportedly closing in on a move to one of South Africa’s leading clubs.
With the transfer window still open on 9 September 2026, the final medical could now pave the way for Sundowns to confirm another defensive addition.
