AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel met with former Bafana Bafana defender Mark Fish on Monday, 14 September 2026, to discuss a potential partnership between the civil rights organisation and the Mark Fish Foundation.

Kriel shared details of the meeting on X, stating that the two sides spoke about AfriForum's role in supporting the foundation's efforts to host soccer tournaments in rural traditional communities with which the organisation already holds cooperation agreements. A photograph accompanying the post showed Fish holding an AfriForum-branded soccer ball.

AfriForum and Mark Fish Foundation eye rural communities

The proposed initiative would see AfriForum use its existing community networks to help the Mark Fish Foundation bring organised football to underserved rural areas. Fish, who earned 62 caps for South Africa and was a key figure in the country's post-apartheid sporting identity, founded his foundation to use sport as a vehicle for youth development.

AfriForum, which describes itself as a civil society organisation advocating for minority rights, has in the past faced accusations of racial bias, a characterisation the organisation rejects.

South Africans divided over the partnership

The announcement attracted significant attention online, with the post accumulating over 19,600 views. Reactions were sharply divided.

Several users raised concerns about Fish's association with AfriForum. @CitizenAndile wrote:

"Mark Fish, no matter how hungry you are, don't associate yourself with this divisive organisation." @Lord_of_Wakanda added: "@markfish74 You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the Villain. Of all the people you could have aligned yourself with, you chose the one that is in opposition to your life experience."

@Phutibosh10 appealed directly to the former defender:

"Mark Fish, my brother, stay far away from that Oom; the Oom is divisive and is sowing divisions in this country. You are a legend, loved by the majority of soccer supporters."

@I_am_Who_I_aam urged caution without outright condemnation:

"Mark Fish was loved by all SA citizens. I hope you guys would not use his vulnerability to teach him untoward things."
