The speculation followed head coach Rassie Erasmus’ mass changes to the squad after their 32-17 victory over France in Paris the previous weekend.

Erasmus cited player exhaustion as the main reason for the alterations, but media and fan chatter suggested he either had ulterior motives or simply wanted to give fringe players valuable Test experience. Newly capped Zachary Porthen featured in the starting lineup.

Willemse explained that the “B team” tag had only strengthened the squad’s resolve, particularly after they had to contend with an early red card to Franco Mostert on their way to victory.

He said the players had come together during the week and that the media narrative suggesting they were second-string felt disrespectful to many of the seasoned champions in the squad.

“Several members of the matchday team have won World Cups, including double champion Handré Pollard. Others, such as Ethan Hooker and Canan Moodie, have been in outstanding form,” Willemse said.

He added that the team’s performance reflected that frustration, and he expressed pride in every member of the setup, from the players to the coaching and medical staff.

“This is a performance we will remember for a very long time,” he said.

Willemse highlights team effort

Willemse described the win as particularly special given the early setback with Mostert’s red card. He noted that the team had to show character and adapt quickly, with half-time adjustments guided by the coaching staff making a noticeable impact in the second half.

While he received the man of the match award, Willemse emphasised that the victory was a full team effort.

“I’m very proud of every teammate who stepped up. The coaches are world-class, and the players executed our plans effectively,” he said.

He admitted the performance was not perfect, with a few dropped balls, missed lineouts, conceded penalties, and another yellow card. Despite these errors, Willemse said the squad had shown determination and a strong commitment to the Springbok badge, their country, and each other.
