The Springboks are looking to bounce back when the Nations Championship resumes in November after their 42-38 defeat to Australia in Perth, with flanker Paul de Villiers saying the loss has strengthened their resolve.
De Villiers, who earned his fifth Test cap against the Wallabies on Sunday, 27 September, admitted that losing in the green and gold remained difficult but said the team had taken important lessons from the match.
“We always learn, and of course we like to learn while winning, but sometimes you learn more by losing,” De Villiers said, according to SA Rugby.

“We’re not done. There are still a couple of games coming up in November, and for the Nations Championship we’re going to go all in and make sure we do everything we can to win that trophy.”

Paul de Villiers highlights key Wallabies lessons
The Springboks conceded 42 points in Perth after coach Rassie Erasmus made 13 changes to the starting XV following their 3-1 series victory over New Zealand. De Villiers said Australia created pressure that exposed areas the Boks needed to improve.
“We’re never happy losing in a Springbok jersey,” he said.
“I thought they put us in scenarios where we conceded a lot of penalties, especially in the first half, and we got into a situation where we had to chase the game.”
He added that the late fightback was encouraging, but errors had contributed to the result.
“That said, we’re obviously proud of the fight in the last couple of minutes,” De Villiers said.
Australia experience adds World Cup value
The Perth Test also gave several Springboks valuable exposure to conditions they could encounter at next year's Rugby World Cup in Australia.
De Villiers said the trip had helped the squad become familiar with the country ahead of their return for the global tournament.
“A couple of us were in Australia for the first time,” he said. “We are coming back next year, so it was a valuable outing.”
The Nations Championship resumes in November, with South Africa scheduled to face Italy, France and Ireland before the competition's Finals Weekend in London from 27 to 29 November.
The Perth defeat therefore leaves the Springboks with both a setback to respond to and valuable match experience ahead of a crucial 2027 World Cup campaign.
