A woman named Kalpana Balan has etched her name in the Guinness World Record for having an extraordinary set of 38 teeth, surpassing the average adult count by a whopping six.

How did Balan develop extra teeth?

The India mother of one has four additional mandibular (lower jaw) teeth and two extra maxillary (upper jaw) teeth, making her the titleholder for the most teeth in a female's mouth.

Kalpana's journey to this unique record began during her adolescence, when the additional teeth started sprouting one by one.

Despite experiencing no pain, she faced challenges while eating, as food frequently got stuck between the extra set of teeth.

When her parents discovered this dental anomaly, they were taken aback and suggested getting the extra teeth extracted.

However, Kalpana's dentist advised against immediate extraction, citing the complexity of the procedure.

Undeterred, Balan chose to preserve the extra teeth, fearing the surgery required for their removal.

Balan has room for extra teeth

"I am so happy to get the Guinness World Records title. It's my lifetime achievement," expressed Kalpana Balan after officially clinching the record.

Interestingly, Balan may extend her record further as she currently has two unfilled teeth, leaving room for a potential update in the future.

The male counterpart for this dental championship is Evano Mellone of Canada, who boasts a total of 41 teeth.

The medical term for the presence of extra teeth is known as hyperdontia or polydontia. Up to 3.8% of the global population is affected by one or more supernumerary teeth.

While the exact cause of hyperdontia remains unknown, it is believed to result from a defect in the tooth development process.

According to Guinness World Records, supernumerary teeth arise from an extra tooth bud near a regular one or possibly from splitting a normal tooth bud.

Kenyan teacher set to attempt Guinness World Record

Back at home, Kenyan science teacher Rose Tata Wekesa is gearing up to make history by trying to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest individual science lesson.

Wekesa, a dedicated educator specialising in biology and chemistry, took to her Facebook page to announce her ambitious endeavour, scheduled to take place starting February 13, 2024.

In her Facebook post, Wekesa expressed her excitement about the upcoming challenge and called upon the community for support.
